Dealing with stock damage insurance claims can be a stressful and challenging experience, particularly when the loss spans damaged stock, contaminated stock, and stock that survived the event but cannot be sold at full price. A loss assessor documents each category of stock loss separately and presents the claim against the right valuation basis. N.J. Carroll & Associates have handled stock claims for Irish retail, hospitality, manufacturing and storage businesses since 1988.
How to Make A Stock Damage Claim
Make the premises safe. Isolate utilities where damaged. Keep the affected stock in place where possible until photographed.
Photograph and video the stock loss in situ. Categories, quantities, condition, packaging.
Compile the stock records. Latest stock-take, purchase ledger, sales ledger. The pre-loss inventory is the foundation.
Categorise the loss. Total destruction, partial damage, contaminated but recoverable, sound but unsaleable due to brand or use-by.
Notify the insurer in writing without undue delay.
Engage a loss assessor. The loss adjuster wants to settle stock at the lowest reasonable basis (cost, salvage); we push for the contractual basis (replacement, gross profit-inclusive where the policy permits).
Document the salvage process. Stock that can be salvaged should be valued and either sold to mitigate or counted in the settlement.
Quantify the consequential loss. Lost sales while stock is being replaced flows into the business interruption claim.
Negotiate the settlement.
Reconcile to the post-loss stock-take.
Remember, stock claims are won by clean stock records. Three years of consistent stock-takes plus the purchase ledger settle most stock claims fairly.
What is considered a stock damage insurance claim?
A stock damage claim is presented under the contents/stock section of a commercial property policy and covers physical damage, contamination, or destruction of trading stock arising from an insured peril. The basis of valuation (cost, replacement, or selling price) varies by policy and is usually the most contested point.
Common stock damage scenarios
Water damage to retail, warehouse, or food stock
Smoke contamination from an adjacent fire
Fire destruction of warehouse or shop floor stock
Power failure damaging chilled or frozen stock
Theft of stock from premises
Storm damage to outdoor stock or display
Contamination from chemical or fuel spills
Mould damage to soft goods following a flood
Does insurance cover stock damage?
Most commercial property policies cover stock under contents but the basis of valuation matters:
Cost basis. The default in most policies; covers what the stock cost to acquire.
Selling-price basis. An optional extension that includes lost margin.
Sub-limits. Often a cap per category (refrigerated stock, valuables).
Average clause. If sums insured are under-stated, the insurer pro-rates the settlement.
Salvage requirement. Salvageable stock must be salvaged and counted.

Frequently asked
Common stock damage claim questions
How is damaged stock valued, at cost or at selling price?
It depends on the policy. The default is cost-plus-overheads. Selling-price (declaration-linked) cover is an extension that covers lost margin too. We check the schedule first and present the claim on the most favourable applicable basis.
Will my premium go up if I make a claim?
Some claims trigger a premium increase, some don't, and accidental-damage claims behave very differently from theft or subsidence claims. We'll advise on the wider implications BEFORE you decide to claim, not just push every loss through.
Is the loss adjuster the insurer sent on my side?
No. The loss adjuster works for the insurance company, their job is to validate the claim and contain its cost. Your loss assessor (us) works only for you, the policyholder. They are not the same role.
How much do you cost? When do I pay?
No win, no fee. Our fee is a percentage of the additional settlement we secure above the insurer's opening offer, agreed in writing up front. If we cannot improve on what the insurer would have paid you anyway, you owe nothing.
Can you visit me anywhere in Ireland?
Yes. Our office is in Dublin 6W and we serve every Irish county. Same-day site visits are routine for emergencies; standard non-emergency visits within 48 hours.
I've already made my claim and the insurer has offered me a settlement. Is it too late?
Not at all. We can step in at any stage of a claim, even after an offer has been made, and frequently improve the settlement. Don't accept the offer until you've spoken to us, signing accepts the figure as final.
