Dealing with fire damage insurance claims can be a challenging and overwhelming process. Engaging a loss assessor to handle your fire damage claim for you is almost always the best option as they deal directly with the insurance company and negotiate the best available settlement on your behalf so you don’t have to.

However, if you do decide to handle it all yourself, you should follow these steps, to help you navigate the process more smoothly:

  1. Safety First: Ensure that everyone is safe and out of harm’s way. Contact emergency services immediately if the fire is still ongoing or if there are any injuries.
  2. Notify Your Insurance Company: Report the fire incident to your insurance company as soon as possible. Many insurance policies have specific time limits for filing a claim, so it’s crucial to act quickly.
  3. Document the Damage: Take photos and videos of the damage caused by the fire. This will serve as evidence for your insurance claim and help in the assessment process.
  4. Prevent Further Damage: Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage to your property, such as covering damaged areas with tarps or boarding up broken windows. However, don’t make permanent repairs until your insurance adjuster has assessed the damage.
  5. Keep Records: Maintain a detailed record of all interactions with your insurance company, including phone calls, emails, and letters. Note down the names and titles of the representatives you speak with.
  6. Cooperate with the Insurance Company’s Loss Adjuster: Once you’ve filed your claim, an insurance adjuster will likely visit your property to assess the damage. Cooperate fully and provide them with all the necessary information. Be honest about the extent of the damage.
  7. Understand Your Policy: Familiarize yourself with the terms and coverage of your insurance policy. This will help you understand what is and may not be covered under your specific policy.
  8. Get Multiple Estimates: Obtain multiple estimates from reputable contractors for repairs and restoration. This will help you gauge the cost of restoring your property accurately.
  9. Keep Receipts and Invoices: Keep track of all expenses related to the fire damage, including temporary housing costs, meals, and any other necessary expenses. These receipts will be essential for reimbursement.
  10. Don’t Accept Lowball Offers: Insurance companies may sometimes offer settlements that are less than what you believe you are entitled to. Don’t hesitate to negotiate or seek assistance from a public adjuster if necessary.
  11. Seek Legal Advice if Needed: If you encounter difficulties or disputes during the claims process, consider seeking legal advice from an experienced solicitor specialising in insurance claims.
  12. Be Patient and Persistent: Dealing with insurance claims can be time-consuming, but it’s essential to be patient and persistent throughout the process.

Remember, every insurance claim is unique, and the process can vary depending on your policy and insurance company. Staying organized and informed will significantly increase your chances of settlement of a successful fire damage insurance claim.

Types of Fire Damage Insurance Claims

The usual types of fire damage Insurance claims that we deal with occur as a result of discarded cigarettes, candles or chip pans going on fire where boiling oil is left on stoves and allowed to overheat. The fumes then ignite causing the fire. Other types of fire that we commonly see are due to electrical faults where appliances or wiring in the dwelling or commercial building malfunction.

Similarly, fire damage insurance claims can also be due to ashes being put in bins that are cleared out from fireplaces following the fire the night before, from the chimney or even the spread of fire from an adjoining building to your own building. Fire damage insurance claims can also occur arising from arson or malicious damage by intruders or vandals.

Fire damage can spread to areas in your home that may not be immediately visible to you. Sometimes, smoke or soot can spread to areas in the house where the fire itself did not even reach. Electrical appliances are often vulnerable to breaking down when soot gets into them as it can become corrosive and cause major damage. Hence, professional cleaning would be crucial here to prevent any further damage.

Frequently asked

Common fire damage claim questions

The fire brigade attended and filed a report. Is that enough for the claim?

The fire-brigade report is useful but not enough. Insurers want a forensic-cause assessment, a full damage schedule, a contents inventory and structural engineer reports for any major damage. We coordinate all of those so the claim is presented end-to-end.

Will my premium go up if I make a claim?

Some claims trigger a premium increase, some don't, and accidental-damage claims behave very differently from theft or subsidence claims. We'll advise on the wider implications BEFORE you decide to claim, not just push every loss through.

Is the loss adjuster the insurer sent on my side?

No. The loss adjuster works for the insurance company, their job is to validate the claim and contain its cost. Your loss assessor (us) works only for you, the policyholder. They are not the same role.

How much do you cost? When do I pay?

No win, no fee. Our fee is a percentage of the additional settlement we secure above the insurer's opening offer, agreed in writing up front. If we cannot improve on what the insurer would have paid you anyway, you owe nothing.

Can you visit me anywhere in Ireland?

Yes. Our office is in Dublin 6W and we serve every Irish county. Same-day site visits are routine for emergencies; standard non-emergency visits within 48 hours.

I've already made my claim and the insurer has offered me a settlement. Is it too late?

Not at all. We can step in at any stage of a claim, even after an offer has been made, and frequently improve the settlement. Don't accept the offer until you've spoken to us, signing accepts the figure as final.
