Dealing with farm insurance claims can be a stressful and challenging experience, particularly because farm policies span buildings, contents, livestock, machinery, stock, and business interruption, often with each section governed by separate conditions and exclusions. A loss assessor works through each affected section of cover and presents an integrated claim. N.J. Carroll & Associates have handled farm claims across rural Ireland since 1988.
How to Make A Farm Insurance Claim
Make the property and any livestock safe. Stop secondary loss before everything else.
Photograph and video the damage. Buildings, machinery, stock, livestock losses, fencing, surrounding land.
Notify the insurer of every affected section of cover. Buildings, contents, machinery, stock, livestock, business interruption, public liability where relevant.
Engage emergency services where required. Veterinary care, fire brigade, contractors for make-safe.
Engage a loss assessor. The loss adjuster typically represents the insurer across all sections; multi-section farm claims are particularly prone to under-settlement.
Compile financial and operational records. Herd numbers, stock counts, milk records, plant inventories, accounts.
Document the consequential loss. Lost milk yield, lost grazing capacity, additional feed costs, contracted-out work.
Prepare the claim across each section.
Apply for interim payments where the policy permits.
Negotiate the integrated settlement.
Remember, farm policies are complex and inter-connected. Each section has its own basis of valuation. The integrated claim is what wins farm settlements.
What is considered a farm insurance claim?
A farm insurance claim is presented under whichever sections of the farm policy are engaged. Most farm policies include buildings, contents, machinery and plant, livestock, stock, public liability, and business interruption. The claim engages every section where loss occurred.
Common farm insurance claim scenarios
Storm damage to sheds, slatted houses, milking parlours, or grain stores
Fire damage to farm buildings, hay or straw sheds, machinery
Lightning damage to electrical systems and milking equipment
Flood damage to land, fencing, and ground-floor buildings
Livestock losses from accident, disease, or fire
Theft of machinery, fuel, or stock
Damage to slurry handling, water systems, fencing
Crop loss where cover applies
Public liability incidents involving the public on farm land
Does insurance cover farm losses?
Each section of a farm policy has its own conditions. Common refusal grounds:
Maintenance. Insurers contest claims where the building or machinery shows lack of maintenance.
Sums insured. Farm policies are often under-insured; average clauses can reduce settlements.
Veterinary records. Livestock claims need clean records.
Fencing and security. Theft claims often turn on whether reasonable security was in place.
Defined sub-limits. Each category of stock or plant may have its own cap.

Frequently asked
Common farm insurance claim questions
The damage spans buildings, machinery, and stock. Are these one claim or several?
Several heads of cover under one policy. Each section is settled on its own basis, but we present an integrated claim so nothing falls between sections. Farm policies are particularly prone to under-settlement when handled section by section.
Will my premium go up if I make a claim?
Some claims trigger a premium increase, some don't, and accidental-damage claims behave very differently from theft or subsidence claims. We'll advise on the wider implications BEFORE you decide to claim, not just push every loss through.
Is the loss adjuster the insurer sent on my side?
No. The loss adjuster works for the insurance company, their job is to validate the claim and contain its cost. Your loss assessor (us) works only for you, the policyholder. They are not the same role.
How much do you cost? When do I pay?
No win, no fee. Our fee is a percentage of the additional settlement we secure above the insurer's opening offer, agreed in writing up front. If we cannot improve on what the insurer would have paid you anyway, you owe nothing.
Can you visit me anywhere in Ireland?
Yes. Our office is in Dublin 6W and we serve every Irish county. Same-day site visits are routine for emergencies; standard non-emergency visits within 48 hours.
I've already made my claim and the insurer has offered me a settlement. Is it too late?
Not at all. We can step in at any stage of a claim, even after an offer has been made, and frequently improve the settlement. Don't accept the offer until you've spoken to us, signing accepts the figure as final.
