Conservatory Damage Insurance Claims, N.J. Carroll & Associates

Dealing with conservatory damage insurance claims can be a stressful and challenging experience, particularly because conservatories sit awkwardly in policy wording, sometimes treated as buildings, sometimes as a separate structure with its own limit. A loss assessor reads the schedule first to confirm how the conservatory is defined and how damage is to be valued. N.J. Carroll & Associates have handled conservatory claims across Ireland since 1988.

How to Make A Conservatory Damage Claim

  1. Make the conservatory safe. If glass has broken, isolate the area, board up where required, and keep children and pets out until the structure is secured.
  2. Photograph all damage from outside and inside. Roof, walls, frames, glazing, base, contents.
  3. Identify the cause. Storm, falling tree branch, vandalism, accidental damage. The peril determines the basis of the claim.
  4. Notify the insurer in writing without undue delay.
  5. Read the policy schedule for conservatory definition. Some policies cap the conservatory under “outbuildings” with a low limit. Others treat it as part of the main buildings cover.
  6. Engage a loss assessor. The loss adjuster wants to limit the claim to the conservatory itself; we ensure adjacent buildings damage and contents inside are also captured.
  7. Obtain replacement quotations. Modern conservatories vary widely in spec; the replacement should match the original.
  8. Document contents damaged inside. Furniture, fittings, electronics that suffered weather exposure or impact.
  9. Prepare a Bill of Quantities for the reinstatement.
  10. Negotiate the settlement and review before signing.

Remember, conservatories are notoriously under-insured because the original cost is often forgotten by the time the claim is made. Replacement cost today is often double the original.

What is considered a conservatory damage insurance claim?

A conservatory damage claim is presented under whichever peril caused the damage, typically storm, accidental damage, or fallen tree. The conservatory is usually covered as part of the buildings section of a home insurance policy, but with potential sub-limits or specific exclusions. Roof glazing, structural framing, base, and any electrics or under-floor heating inside are all in scope.

Common Causes of Conservatory Damage Insurance Claims

  • Storm winds lifting the roof or breaking polycarbonate panels
  • Falling tree branches piercing the roof or smashing side glazing
  • Hail damage to polycarbonate roofs, often only visible after a heavy storm
  • Impact damage from garden equipment, balls, or wildlife
  • Failed seals around the conservatory base allowing water ingress
  • Frost heave damaging the base in long cold snaps
  • Fire damage from neighbouring outbuildings or BBQs
  • Vandalism or theft of contents stored inside

Does insurance cover conservatory damage?

Most Irish home insurance policies cover conservatory damage, but the conditions are particular:

  • Sub-limits. Some policies cap conservatory cover well below the actual replacement cost.
  • Wear and tear / weathering. Polycarbonate that has yellowed and become brittle from UV is not claimable; a panel that fails after impact is.
  • Defective installation. If the original installation was sub-standard, the insurer may decline.
  • Maintenance issues. Sealant failures from age rather than a discrete event.

Frequently asked

Common conservatory damage claim questions

The conservatory roof was damaged in a storm. Is it covered the same way as the main roof?

Usually yes, but check the policy schedule. Some policies cover conservatories under a sub-limit, lower than the main buildings cover. We confirm the limit and push back if it is inadequate to replace the actual damaged structure.

Will my premium go up if I make a claim?

Some claims trigger a premium increase, some don't, and accidental-damage claims behave very differently from theft or subsidence claims. We'll advise on the wider implications BEFORE you decide to claim, not just push every loss through.

Is the loss adjuster the insurer sent on my side?

No. The loss adjuster works for the insurance company, their job is to validate the claim and contain its cost. Your loss assessor (us) works only for you, the policyholder. They are not the same role.

How much do you cost? When do I pay?

No win, no fee. Our fee is a percentage of the additional settlement we secure above the insurer's opening offer, agreed in writing up front. If we cannot improve on what the insurer would have paid you anyway, you owe nothing.

Can you visit me anywhere in Ireland?

Yes. Our office is in Dublin 6W and we serve every Irish county. Same-day site visits are routine for emergencies; standard non-emergency visits within 48 hours.

I've already made my claim and the insurer has offered me a settlement. Is it too late?

Not at all. We can step in at any stage of a claim, even after an offer has been made, and frequently improve the settlement. Don't accept the offer until you've spoken to us, signing accepts the figure as final.
